Appearing in Sydney ahead of an early 2013 market launch, the new 6 range will be offered with two powertrains: the 2.2 litre SkyActiv-D diesel, and the new SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre petrol engine.
Mazda's new i-Eloop regenerative braking system will also feature as standard with both engines and across all trim grades.
Tested by TMR in a camouflaged test car last year, the SkyActiv-D diesel offers 136kW and 420Nm of torque. Fuel consumption figures peg the 2.2 litre diesel at around 4.2 l/100km.
While the smaller 2.0 litre SkyActiv-G engine will be offered in some overseas markets, Australian petrol options will be limited to the larger 2.5 litre mill.
This engine delivers 138kW and 250Nm of torque - 10 percent more power and 11 percent more torque than in the current previous-generation petrol Mazda6.
Mazda's new i-Eloop regenerative braking system stores braking energy in a capacitor, rather than the more common battery arrangement.
Like most systems, i-Eloop recovers kinetic energy as the vehicle decelerates, which the alternator uses to generate electricity that is then sent to the capacitor.
The stored energy is used to power the vehicle's climate control, audio system and other electrical features. The system will also charge the vehicle's battery when necessary. Mazda's i-stop system will also feature.
