Hyundai's second-generation Santa Fe SUV was the first to preview the carmaker's brighter future, combining smooth styling with a capable mechanical package.

Now, with a refreshed line-up filling out the Hyundai range, the Santa Fe is now the oldest of the brand's current models. According to reports out of the US this week, it will soon be the newest.

American website Motor Trend reports that Hyundai's US arm has confirmed a New York Auto Show debut for the next-generation Santa Fe in April.

Technical details have yet to be revealed, although we can likely expect the new Santa Fe to continue with the 145kW 2.2 litre R-Series diesel that features in the current model.

We could also expect to see the brand's new 205kW/372Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, lifted from the Genesis Coupe to face off against Ford's EcoBoost-powered Explorer.

In Australia, the new model will likely take on the "ix45" name, although the recent arrival of new Elantra and Accent models suggests that Hyundai Australia is no longer as married to its new naming scheme as it once was.

Watch for more details on the new Santa Fe to surface in the coming months.
