Hyundai's all-new 2013 Santa Fe SUV is now on sale in Australia, replacing the second-generation model that arrived in 2007.

Kicking off at $36,990, Australia gets only the short-wheelbase version of the new SUV, but the existing seven-seat layout remains the standard layout.

For 2013, the Santa Fe will be offered with two engines: the 2.4 litre GDi petrol and the 2.2 litre CRDi diesel. The previous 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine will not appear.

The new Santa Fe also debuts the next evolution of Hyundai's design language, its 'Fluidic Sculpture' style transforming into 'Storm Edge'.

Up front, the new Santa Fe gets a squared-off face and a new take on Hyundai's familiar hexagonal grille design, sharing its inspiration with the recent Hexa Space concept.

The profile of the new Santa Fe is dominated by a fast-rising belt line, while the rear gets slender new LED tail-lights.


Mechanical Package

Of the two engines on offer, the 2.4 litre petrol is available only in the entry-spec Active model in both manual and auto configuration.

The familiar 2.2 litre diesel can also be specified with the Active, again in manual and auto. The diesel is standard for Elite and Highlander, but with no manual option available for these models.

The 2.2 litre turbodiesel continues unchanged, producing 145kW and 421Nm (manual), and 436Nm (automatic).

A 141kW/242Nm version of the 2.4 litre Theta-II four cylinder engine found in the ix35 and i45 is the only petrol option, with the 3.5 litre V6 left out of the 2013 line-up.

Transmission choices for both engines are a six-speed manual or torque converter automatic, with the manual option available only on Active models. All-wheel-drive is standard across the range.

Matched with the manual and automatic transmissions, the petrol engine lists fuel use 9.0 l/100km.

Fuel use for the diesel engine is listed at 6.6 l/100km in manual form, and 7.3 l/100km for the automatic.

The suspension package includes MacPherson struts up front, and an independent multi-link design at the rear.

All models feature an all-wheel-drive layout, and a 4WD 'Lock' mode is featured. Engaged through a button in the centre console, the system sets torque distribution to 50/50 front/rear depending on vehicle speed.

All models come with ‘Flex Steer’ electromechanical power steering, giving the driver a choice of three levels of steering assistance.

Like all new Hyundai models, the new Santa Fe also benefits from the carmaker's local tuning programme, developed to match the SUV's handling and comfort to Australian roads and conditions.


Features and Dimensions

Active models feature a dashboard-integrated 4.3 inch touchscreen display, with a reversing camera standard for the first time - previously only offered on the Highlander and limited-edition Trail models.

Rear Park Assist is also standard across the range.

Active models also get Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, electric lumbar support, rear air-conditioning, roof rails, 'premium' steering wheel and gear knob, steering-mounted audio controls, projector headlights, automatic headlights, one-touch driver window control, mirror-integrated indicators and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Elite and Highlander models get a larger screen measuring seven inches, while also gaining Hyundai’s SUNA sat-nav system.

The Elite spec also gets a 10-speaker premium audio system, climate control, push-button start, electric park brake, power-adjusted driver's seat, powered folding mirrors, cornering lights, chilled glove box, chrome exterior trim, and 18-inch alloys.

The top-shelf Highlander adds a panoramic glass sunroof, HID xenon healights, powered front passenger seat, front and rear seat warmers, driver's seat memory, LED tail-lights, auto-dipping side mirrors and 19-inch alloys.

Standard safety features include Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-skid Braking Systemn (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist System (BAS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), and Downhill Brake Control (DBC). The new Santa Fe benefits from Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) with 3-mode Flex Steer and introduces Hyundai’s Advanced Traction Cornering Control (ATCC) system.

The new Santa Fe is covered by a five-year unlimited kilometre manufacturer’s warranty, along with the Hyundai iCare programme including three years Capped Price Service, three years NAVTEQ MapCare Plan, up to seven years complimentary Hyundai Roadside Assist, and support from the iCare 24-hour Customer Care Centre.

Storage capacity is listed at 516 litres with the third row seats out of the way, and 1615 litres with the third and second rows down.

Towing capacity is listed at 2500kg braked for the manual, and 2000kg braked for the auto. Both transmissions list 750kg for unbraked towing. Towball weight is limited to 100kg.
