Honda's third-generation MDX has recently been spotted near the Nurburgring undergoing testing for its 2013 launch.

The heavy disguise masks what is believed to be a slightly less adventurous design for a car sold with Acura badges in the US, and Honda badges in Japan (and previously Australia).

The new MDX is expected to take its lead from the more sober Acura RLX sedan shown at the 2012 New York Auto Show.

Reports overseas suggest that not only will the MDX's styling follow the RLX's, but the sedan's hybrid drivetrain may also be transplanted into the mid-sized SUV.

The hybrid would likely be offered to complement the base model's expected 3.5 litre 'Earth  Dreams' VTEC V6.

Acrua's RLX concept featured a 276kW/609Nm hybrid all-wheel drive arrangement that was also rumoured to be the new NSX's powerplant.

All three of these cars use a variant of Honda's Super Handling All Wheel Drive technology.

The MDX has been around in its current form since 2006, and last got a minor facelift in 2009. Only the first generation MDX was sold in Australia.

The new MDX is expected to be released late in 2013 for the US 2014 model year. It's unlikely to make its way back to Australia, but if it does, we'll let you know.
