Honda's all-new CR-V SUV hits Australia this week, arriving just 20 months since it first debuted in concept form in California early last year.

The new model brings a new look for Japan's number-three carmaker, along with a smaller footprint and a more spacious cabin.

The entry 2.0 VTi 2WD manual now starts at $27,490, putting it $600 below the outgoing all-wheel-drive entry model - although the latter featured the more powerful 2.4 litre engine.

The range tops out with the 2.4 litre all-wheel-drive VTi-L automatic, priced at $42,290. A diesel option is also scheduled to join the range in late 2013, expected to be Honda's 110kW/350Nm 2.2 litre engine.

Mechanical Package

All two-wheel-drive variants in the new CR-V range are powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 114kW and 190Nm of torque.

Mated with a six-speed manual transmission, the engine list fuel consumption figures of 7.8 l/100km. Opt for the updated five-speed auto and the number drops slightly to 7.7 l/100km.

In all-wheel-drive form, the CR-V gets Honda's revised 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, offering 140kW and 222Nm. The automatic shifter is the only option here, listing fuel consumption at 8.7 l/100km - a 13 percent improvement.

Features & Dimensions

Following the theme of Honda's latest models, the new CR-V is smaller on the outside than its predecessor, overall length falling by 20mm to 4545mm.

Interior space is up however, particularly in the rear cargo space, where capacity grows 147 litres to 1648 litres (with the rear seats folded flat).

The length of the cargo space has grown by 140mm to 1570mm, and the floor height has dropped 665mm for more convenient loading.

Honda has worked to deliver a more 'sedan-like' driving position with the new CR-V, lowering the hip-point by 38mm and reducing the height of the vehicle by 30mm to 1685mm.

Standard features in the entry VTi trim grade include front, side and full curtain airbags, a reversing camera, air conditioning, cruise control, remote central locking, power windows, Bluetooth connectivity and roof rails.

Moving up to the mid-spec VTi-S, there's satellite navigation, auto headlights and wipers, fog lights, dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors.

The top-shelf VTi-L adds front parking sensors, HID headlights with active cornering function, sunroof, leather trim, powered and heated front seats, keyless entry and push-button start.

  • CR-V VTi 2.0 2WD - manual - $27,490
  • CR-V VTi 2.0 2WD - automatic - $29,790
  • CR-V VTi With Navigation 2.0 2WD - automatic - $31,790
  • CR-V VTi 2.4 4WD - automatic - $32,790
  • CR-V VTi-S 2.4 4WD - automatic - $36,290
  • CR-V VTi-L 2.4 4WD - automatic - $42,290
