Honda Australia's first-ever diesel, the new Civic Hatch Diesel, is now on sale.

Priced at $26,990 (plus on-roads), the Civic Hatch DTi-S joins the current petrol range, itself updated recently with a stronger feature list and new pricing.

Power in this new spec is provided by Honda's 1.6 litre i-DTEC turbodiesel four-cylinder, unveiled in 2011 and already available in European models.

Matched exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission, the turbodiesel offers 88kW at 4000rpm and 300Nm of torque at 2000rpm. Australian combined-cycle fuel consumption figures are listed at 4.0 l/100km.

By comparison, Honda's recently revised 2.2 litre i-DTEC, expected here later in the year in the diesel CR-V SUV, produces 110kW and 350Nm and returns around 5.8 l/100km on a combined cycle.

Honda also claims the 1.6 litre engine is the world's lightest diesel, coming in at 170kg thanks to an aluminium block, a compact turbocharger, and a focus on lightweight high-strength materials.

The engine is also the first from Honda's new Earth Dreams range to make its way to Australia.

Standard features with the DTi-S variant include 17-inch alloy wheels, auto stop/start, Hill Start Assist, automatic headlights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, Economy mode, daytime running lights, tyre pressure monitoring system and Honda's 'Magic Seats' system.

Rear storage capacity is listed at 400 litres with the back seats upright, growing to 1130 litres when folded flat. Braked towing capacity is rated at 1500kg, and unbraked at 500kg. Down-ball load is rated at 75kg.

The Civic Hatch Diesel carries a five-star ANCAP crash safety rating, and features front, side and curtain airbags, along with Vehicle Stability Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist.

  • Civic Hatch VTi-L - petrol automatic - $25,490
