Honda's Accord has been a bit player in the large car market for a while now, but an incoming replacement looks set to inject a bit more visual excitement when it arrives either late this year or in the first half of next year.

This heavily-camouflaged prototype doesn't give much away, but we can see that the roofline, A-pillars and glasshouse aren't radically changed.

The styling of the new Honda Accord is expected to ape that of the Accord Coupe Concept, which made its debut at this year's Detroit Auto Show.

We can anticipate a design that adds more visual width to the car, with thin Accord Euro-like headlamps and wider airdams stretching across the Accord's snout.

Sheetmetal will also be smoother and more organic than the current car, but not too far removed from the current car's design.

It's too early to say what will power the next-gen Accord, but our money is on the existing 2.4 litre petrol four and 3.5 litre petrol six carrying over, albeit with minor changes to boost efficiency.

The 2012 Accord is expected to make its global debut later this year.
