UPDATE - MAY 2013: Pricing and photos for the new VF Commodore have been released. Click here.

In 2011, Holden revealed the first details of the new VF Commodore, confirming that the Federal Government's now defunct Green Car Innovation Fund would contribute to developing a lighter and 'greener' model.

Then, early in 2012, it was confirmed at last that the Commodore will return to the US market, following the demise of the Pontiac G8 program (and the Pontiac badge) with a limited run of Chevrolet-badged SS performance models.

Holden remained predictably tight-lipped as the months passed, but new spy footage obtained by TMR in 2012 revealed the first glimpse of the new Commodore in testing.

The world got its first real preview of the new Commodore late last year, when GM unveiled the NASCAR racing version of the new Chevrolet SS.

Essentially a shell over an unrelated racing chassis, the NASCAR's similarities to the final production car are limited to the stick-on headlight, grille and bumper graphics, along with the tail-lights and side 'vents' behind the front wheel.

A selection of teaser images were released in the following weeks however, marking the first appearance of the final production model's new headlights and tail-lights.

And finally, Holden boss Mike Devereux confirmed that even beyond the overhauled 'new' VF model, a next-generation Commodore is in development and a 2016/2017 debut is scheduled.

Now, with less than two hours until the new Commodore's unveiling, we wait.
