UPDATE: Read TMR's Trax review here.

Holden's compact new Trax SUV is now on sale in Australia, following the overseas launch of its Chevrolet-badged twin in 2012.

Kicking off at $23,490 plus on-roads, the Trax undercuts the entry level variants of the Nissan Dualis, Mitsubishi ASX and Hyundai ix35 - while also giving Holden a crucial headstart on Ford's EcoSport, due here in December.

“The SUV segment continues to grow rapidly with small SUV sales growing 20 per cent this year," Holden marketing boss Philip Brook said today.

The Trax will be offered with familiar LS and LTZ trim grades, both powered by the same 1.8 litre four-cylinder petrol engine offered with the Cruze range.

Mechanical Package

As it does in the Cruze, the Trax's 1.8 petrol engine produces 103kW and 175Nm of torque, the latter available at 3800rpm.

Matched to a five-speed manual (LS only) or a six-speed auto, the engine promises fuel consumption figures of 7.0 and 7.6 l/100km respectively.

The auto transmission is Holden's Gen II Active Select package, fitted as standard with the LTZ and available as an option with the LS model.

In manual form, the Trax carries a 4.5 star rating on the Government Green Vehicle Guide, while the auto models get a 4 star rating.

Suspension in all Trax models is by McPherson struts up front, matched to a compound crank rear axle.

Both models are available in front-wheel-drive form only, but Holden says it has invested hundreds of hours into fine-tuning the Trax for Australian roads and expectations.

“Our engineers led the calibration development of multiple Trax engine and transmission combinations for more than 20 markets around the globe, including Australia," Holden's boss of Planning and Program Management, Maria Koutsimpiris, said.

“We’ve also had a member of the global Trax team, Juneil Lee, working in Australia over the last 18 months to support the close collaboration between Holden Engineering and the Trax homeroom."

The Trax's local suspension tune includes enhancements to the rear axle's mounting bushes, revised to reduce interior noise on course chip road surfaces - a common feature of Australian roads.

Koutsimpiris added that the Holden team has struck a balance between enthusiastic performance and drive quality, devising a Holden-specific suspension tune in the process.

“We’ve had a significant amount of input into the way Trax is tuned for Australia so we set out to reward the driver with a secure and confident handling feel,” Holden's Vehicle Dynamics Specialist, Michael Barber, said.

Features & Dimensions

Both LS and LTZ models get Holden's new MyLink infotainment system, featuring a seven-inch colour touch screen, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, image and video viewing, BringGo navigation, and connectivity to music apps that include Pandora, TuneIn, and Stitcher radio.

Apple's Siri Eyes Free is also integrated, offering enhanced voice control of the Apple iPhone's Siri assistant system.

Also standard in the LS is a rear view camera and rear parking sensors, 16-inch alloy wheels, leather steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control and auto headlights.

Move up the $27,990 LTZ and there's 18-inch alloys, Sportec seats (heated up front), fog lights, under passenger storage and a trip computer.

Standard safety features include six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control System (TCS), Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist, Break away brake pedal, Three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions and ISOFIX at two rear outboard seating positions.

All models are equipped with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors.

The Holden Trax measures 4248mm long, 1766mm wide and 1674mm tall, riding on a 2555mm wheelbase.

Those seeking practicality in the cabin will find a 60/40 split-folding rear seat layout, and 358 litres of storage space with the rear seats in their upright position.
