The launch of Ford’s next-generation Mondeo mid-sizer has been delayed by up to three months, according to news out of Europe this week.

Originally slated to commence production in April next year at Ford’s Genk plant in Belguim, industry site Automotive News Europe reports that Ford has postponed the launch while it works to finalise homologation and specifications.

"We do not want to go too much into the details, because it is an internal problem. It is not an unusual problem. April 6 was just an internal date for the production start," Ford Belgium spokesman Arnaud Henckaerts told the website.

At the Detroit Motor Show unveiling of the largely identical Fusion in January, Ford announced a first-quarter 2013 European launch.

The Fusion is the US-market sister car to the Mondeo, with the two sharing many design elements.

A new specific production date has not been set for the model, with Ford merely stating; "we are working through various issues to ensure a robust, high quality launch."

The new Mondeo was expected to launch locally by mid-2013, so this delay could push Australian availability back to the third quarter or later.

Ford Australia is yet to announce a local on-sale date, but keep an eye on TMR for any details.
