Ford has released a new teaser video of its upcoming Focus ST hot hatch, with the company's performance boss Jost Capito describing the car's development programme.

The video follows confirmation last month that Ford will unveil the Focus XR5 Turbo's successor at this month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

In the new clip, Capito talks about the new ST's global testing: over the past year, Ford has had more than 60 prototypes in pre-production trials all around the world.

"We go to the UK, the Nurburgring and the US, to make sure that the setup is working for everywhere in the world. Everybody gets the same tyres, same wheels, same settings," Capito says.

The 2012 Focus ST was originally previewed in concept form at last year's Paris Auto Show, where it was also revealed that the new performance Focus would do away with the three-door bodystyle offered with its predecessors.

The new Focus ST will utilise a turbocharged 2.0 four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, producing 184kW and 320Nm - compared to 166kW and 320Nm for its Australian-delivered five-cylinder XR5 Turbo predecessor.

When it launches, the ST will square off against the likes of the Subaru WRX (expected to continue in its current bodystyle), the Golf GTI, the Lancer RalliArt hatch and the Mazda3 MPS.
