UPDATE - July 1 2013: Ford Australia has confirmed a September debut for the Fiesta ST.
The motoring giant has been teasing us for what seems like years with concepts of a go-faster Fiesta, and the result looks to be worth the wait.
The Fiesta ST will be slung along the road by a 130kW EcoBoost 1.6 litre turbo in 'under seven seconds' with the front-wheels handling 240Nm of torque along the way.
Unlike the Volkswagen Polo GTI (the Fiesta ST's chief rival), which is available with a DSG automatic transmission only, the Fiesta ST will offer any transmission you like: so long as it's a six-speed manual.
Ford says the CO2 output will be improved by 20 percent over the old 110kW model.
Developed by Team RS, the Ford performance arm in Europe, the Fiesta was honed over 5000km on the Nurburgring's Nordschliefe.
The ST is 15mm lower than the standard Fiesta and features the trick Torque Vectoring system (as seen on the Focus) and three electronic stability modes.
On the styling front, the ST borrows much of its concept forebear's features, separating it from the regular Fiesta with deeper front and rear bumpers, skirts, dinky roof spoiler and a diffuser.
The interior will have a set of Recaros crammed in with the requisite leather sports wheel and ST-exclusive trim.
Speaking with TMR today, Ford Australia's Sinead Phipps confirmed that while exact timing is still to be confirmed, we can expect the Fiesta ST in Australia sometime after its early 2013 debut in Europe.
