Porsche has confirmed it will reveal a brand-new "compact sports car" at this month's LA Auto Show.

The German sports and luxury marque has not confirmed the identity of the new model, but the smart money is on a debut for the new Cayman coupe.

Spied testing in recent months, the new Boxster-based Cayman was long expected to debut either at the Paris Motor Show in September, or, with that event now past, in Los Angeles.

Details on the new model are still to be revealed, but we expect the new Boxster's 198kW 2.7 litre and 235kW 3.4 litre engines to provide momentum for Cayman and Cayman S variants.

In Boxster form, the engines deliver 0-100km/h times of 5.7 seconds for the regular model, and 5.0 seconds flat for the S.

Like its topless twin, the new Cayman will take on a more aggressive and purposeful look, creating an appealing new option for buyers deterred by the 911 range's hefty price tag.

In road-testing the new Boxster, TMR's Karl Peskett said: "It’s a cut-price 911, but with none of the drawbacks."

Expect more of the same from the Cayman.
