BMW has confirmed that its updated X1 crossover will appear at next month's New York Auto Show, giving the small SUV its first makeover since its 2009 debut.

TMR's spy photographers spotted this pre-production prototype during recent cold-weather testing in Northern Europe.

The front bumper appears to be styled similarly to the new 1 Series hatch, although the headlamp shape and positioning of the foglamps seems unchanged.

It's a similar story out the back - the tail-lights won't feature any radical changes, however the rear bumper will be redesigned.

We can also expect new wheel designs and interior trim options, however powertrain changes aren't expected for the facelifted model - at least internationally.

The 180kW four cylinder petrol turbo engine of the X1 xDrive28i was introduced overseas at the beginning of last year.

The arrival of the facelifted model later this year or early next year may be BMW Australia's opportunity to bring in the new 28i engine and its attendant eight-speed automatic transmission.

However, no concrete local timing for either the 28i powertrain introduction or the arrival of the facelifted X1 has been announced as yet.
