BMW's updated M5 powerhaus has landed in Australia, bringing a slight price hike while adding a raft of new standard features.

Priced at $229,900 plus on-roads (up $755), the 2013 M5 sedan's list of updates is headlined by the new Competition Package, usually a cost option in overseas markets.

The new pack boosts output from the M5's 4.4 litre turbo V8 from 412 to 423kW, shaving 0.1 seconds from the sedan's 0-100km/h sprint time, making for a 4.2 second run.

The key advantage to the Competition Package however is the improvements it makes to handling and dynamics, thanks to new coil springs and recalibrated dampers, with 10mm lowered suspension.

There's also stiffer anti-sway bars, upgraded bushings at the front and a unique tune for the Active M differential and rack-and-pinion steering.

The package also sees the M chassis control system re-tuned to match, with the M driving mode configured to offer higher threshholds of DSC intervention and sharper handling.

New 20-inch light alloy wheels prop-up the corners, and there's also a new exhaust system with 'Black Chrome' tips.

Away from the performance list, there's LED headlights, Lane Change Warning and Driving Assistant with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision and Pedestrian Warning alerts.

You'll also find Soft-Close doors and hands-free opening and closing for the boot-lid (operated by waving your foot under the rear bumper), along with digital radio and Navigation System Professional that allows you to write your destination's address on the touch-sensitive controller surface.

The feature list continues with a full-colour Head-Up display with BMW M functions, surround view, Park Distance Control front and rear, four-zone climate control, sunblinds, glazed windows, heated and ventilated seats, and electric lumbar support.

Styling updates include a subtle touch-up, with a revised M6-inspired grille and lightly updated lighting at both ends.

There's an updated cabin with the M6's three-spoke steering wheel and the new touchpad iDrive system.

The 2013 BMW M5 is available now.
