BMW's big 7 Series limo has been given an update for 2013, bringing new features, updated engines, a new eight-speed auto, and a pair of new petrol-electric ActiveHybrid models.

The update brings a price increase however, with Australian petrol and diesel models adding between $2000 to nearly $6000 to their stickers.

The Australian 2013 7 Series line-up now kicks off at $204,600 for the 730d diesel, topping out at the long-wheelbase ActiveHybrid 7L at $237,000.

The ActiveHybrid 7 has had its 4.4 litre V8 engine replaced by the same 3.0 litre turbo-six driving the 740i.

As with the ActiveHybrid 5 and 3 models, the ActiveHybrid 7 packs its electric motor in between the engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission.

Unlike its eight-cylinder predecessor, the new second-generation hybrid also allows electric-only driving; although you'll only get four kilometres of continuous use, at a top speed of 60km/h. Ideal for start/stop traffic and short trips.

All 2013 7 Series models also pick up a new coasting mode, shutting down the engine where appropriate to save fuel.

Apart from the 760Li, BMW EfficientDynamics technologies including Auto Start/Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and the addition of the ECO PRO mode for the Driving Experience Control have all contributed to lower fuel consumption and greater efficiency.

Features

For 2013, the big 7 Series gets an all-digital dash, allowing the display graphics and colour to change depending on the driving mode; Comfort, Sport, EcoPro.

Head-up display is standard, as is lane departure warning and approach warning. A new dynamic light system is also featured, blacking out the section of high-beam light that can affect motorists on the road ahead.

Dynamic Light pots is new, standard on 750i/760i and optional on others, picking out and highlighting obstacles up to 100 metres ahead.

Other features include self-levelling rear suspension, electric-assisted power steering, updated front seats, 9.2 inch flatscreen displays for the rear seats, and an optional 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound system.

BMW says it has also overhauled the 7 Series' insulation, adding additional sound-deadening materials to the B and C pillars, along with the skirts and boot area.
