BMW's upcoming 4 Series Coupe (or is that 3 Series Coupe?) has been spied during cold-weather testing in Northern Europe this week.

While it's clear that this new model will be the two-door companion to the new 3 Series, it remains unclear if it will stick with the traditional naming, or adopt the rumoured 4 moniker.

The confusion is born out of reports that BMW will switch its Coupe and Convertible models to an even-numbered naming system, with new 2 and 4 Series cars joining the existing 6 Series.

Whatever the outcome, the new Coupe is expected to share its platform and engine range with the new '3er', so expect a run of turbocharged four-cylinder options, along with a top-shelf six-cylinder model.

An M4-badged version could also replace the current M3 Coupe, driven by a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that would replace the current 309kW V8 engine.
