Audi has pulled the covers off its updated R8 supercar family, launching later this year in coupe and convertible Spyder form. A new range-topping V10 Plus coupe also joins the range.

The regular range will hit Australia in early 2013, and while the V10 Plus is not yet confirmed, Audi Australia's Shaun Cleary tells TMR that its arrival is "very likely".

Outputs remain unchanged for 2013, but the 'new' R8 benefits from a number of mechanical updates, along with a handful of styling tweaks.

Up front, the R8 gets Audi's updated hexagonal grill design, along with new headlights that feature strikethrough LED daytime running lights.

The rear end gets updated tail-lights, and depending on specification, both ends benefit from new chrome highlights.

Changes in the cabin have been kept to a minimum, with tweaks to the instrument cluster, shift paddles and upholstery options.

In the engine bay, The 4.2 litre V8 model continues to produce 316kW and 430Nm of torque, and the 5.2 V10 model punches out the same 386kW and 530Nm.

One significant tweak however comes in the form of a new seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, replacing the previous six-speed R tronic unit. For the traditionalists, a six-speed manual is still on the menu.

Audi has also added new 'wave' style brake discs, cutting 2kg from the R8's braking package.

Topping the range is the new R8 V10 Plus Coupe, entering as a new permanent flagship and replacing the limited-edition R8 GT models.

Power for the V10 Plus is delivered by the same 5.2 litre engine, but power is boosted to 405kW and and 540Nm of torque.

The V10 Plus also gets its own unique springs and shocks, camber setup and magnetic ride adaptive damping as standard.

With the S tronic transmission in play, Audi promises a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds for the V10 plus. The six-speed manual lists a 3.6 second run.

On the styling front, the new flagship gets a carbon-fibre treatment to its front splitter, side blades, vents and mirrors.

The updated R8 range will hit Australia in the first quarter of 2013. The V10 plus is still to be confirmed.
