2012 Volkswagen Tiguan On Sale In Australia

Volkswagen's updated-for-2012 Tiguan is now on sale in Australia, offering revised styling, new features and a sharper entry price.

Bringing the Tiguan in line with the overhauled Volkswagen range is a new face and rear, including a sharp new headlight design, letterbox grille and slimmer tail-lights.

Inside, the Tiguan remains largely unchanged, with the standout update being the addition of Volkswagen's new steering wheel design, shared across the company's line-up.

Mechanical Package

There are now four engine options for the 2012 Tiguan range, with the introduction of the 118TSI cutting $5500 off the price of entry and bringing the small SUV under the $30,000 mark for the first time.

118TSI 

The 118TSI is powered by Volkswagen's familiar four-cylinder 'twincharger' engine, delivering 118kW and 240Nm of torque. 

Paired with a six-speed manual transmission only, and equipped with a front-wheel-drive layout, fuel consumption for this model is listed at 6.9 l/100km - making it the most fuel-efficient option in the petrol range.

Helping the 118TSI achieve its low fuel consumption figure is Volkswagen's idle-stop system and a brake energy recuperation system.

132TSI 

The 132TSI is powered by a 2.0 litre petrol engine producing 132kW and 280Nm of torque. This mid-range petrol option is offered with either a six-speed manual transmission or Volkswagen's seven-speed DSG automatic.

Mated to VW's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, the 132TSI lists fuel consumption figures of 8.7 l/100km in manual form and 8.8 l/100km with the automatic.

The 0-100km/h sprint is over in 8.3 seconds for the manual, and an even sharper 7.9 for the capable DSG auto. 

155TSI

Rounding out the petrol range is the 155TSI, driven by the Golf GTI's 155kW and 280Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder. 

Offered with a seven-speed DSG and 4Motion all-wheel-drive only, the 155TSI lists fuel consumption figures of 8.8 l/100km. 

Volkswagen says its range-topping Tiguan will hit 100km/h in 7.3 seconds.

103TDI

Holding up the diesel end of things is the familiar Tiguan 103TDI, its 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel producing 103kW and 320Nm of torque.

The diesel is offered with the 4Motion system only, and is paired with either a six-speed manual or the seven-speed DSG automatic.

With the additional of idle-stop and - in DSG form - a Coasting function, the 103TDI lists fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100km for the manual and 6.2 l/100km for the auto. This is compared to 6.5 and 6.6 l/100km for the previous manual and auto 103TDI variants.

Features

The Tiguan offers 395 litres of storage space in the rear with the back seats up, growing to 1510 litre with the split-folding seats laid flat.

Except for the 155TSI, all Tiguan models are equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, along with air conditioning, and USB and Bluetooth connectivity. 

The top-shelf 155TSI adds 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a touchscreen audio system, rain-sensing wipers, and rear parking distance sensors. There are also chrome-plated roof rails, chrome window surrounds, rear privacy glass, sports seats, front fog lights and sports suspension.

Optional extras for the Tiguan range include Volkswagen's new Park Assist 2 system, Adaptive Chassis Control and the high-end RNS510 satellite navigation system.

Standard safety features include front, front side and curtain airbags and safety-optimised head restraints. There is also Anti-lock braking, Auto Hold, Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. Anti-Slip regulation is standard, along with Electronic Differential Lock, Electronic Stabilisation Program and Engine Braking Control.
