Volkswagen Australia has announced that from February, all models in the Polo range will receive new standard equipment such as Bluetooth, a USB audio input and daytime running lamps.
The Polo GTI will also gain a touchscreen audio head-unit, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and climate control as standard.
Come February 1, VW Australia will also dump the three-door entry grade Polo Trendline from its line up.
With the majority of sales in the upper end of the light car market being dominated by five-door hatches, Volkswagen believes that an all-five-door strategy makes more sense for the Polo - with the exception of the sporty three-door Polo GTI.
Also, with the impending arrival of the Volkswagen Up! sub-compact in late Q4 this year, removing the $16,690 three-door trendline from the range would help provide greater showroom separation between the Up! and the Polo.
The Up! is expected to initially be offered in three-door form with a sub-$15,000 retail price. The new five-door variant could potentially arrive halfway through 2013.
Full pricing for the 2012 Volkswagen Polo range will be announced on February 1.
