VOLKSWAGEN GOLF CABRIOLET

The topless twin to Volkswagen's popular Golf small car is now on sale in Australia, with the launch this week of the 2012 Golf Cabriolet.

The Golf Cabrio's local launch follows its international unveiling at March's Geneva Motor Show, which marks the variant's return to the Golf line-up after a two-generation absence.

Engines

Just one trim grade will feature in the Golf Cabriolet range, with power coming from Volkswagen's familiar 118TSI four-cylinder engine, producing 118kW and 240Nm of torque.

Two transmissions will be offered: a six-speed manual and a seven-speed DSG automatic. Fuel consumption for the manual version is listed at 6.6 l/100km for the manual, and 6.5 l/100km for the auto.

The 0-100km/h run is completed in 8.4 seconds with both transmissions.

Sharing its platform with the regular Golf, the Cabrio gets MacPherson strut suspension up front, along with performance anti-roll bars. There's also a multilink arrangement at the rear.

Features

The two-door Cabriolet gets an electro-hydraulic folding roof that can be lowered or raised in 9.5 seconds, at speeds up to 30km/h.

Up front, the Cabrio gets the new Golf R-inspired headlights, with the addition of the updated internal daytime running LED lights that are now common on European-market Golf models.

At the rear, the Golf R's dark-tinted LED taillights feature beneath the convertible Golf's short rear deck. In the boot, Volkswagen promises a full 250 litres of storage space.

Like the Eos and Beetle Cabrio before it, the new Golf Cabrio does away with the centre-mounted rollbar that was a standout feature of previous Golf Cabrio generations, replaced with the same protective pop-up bars featured with the Audi A3 convertible.

Standard features for the Golf Cabriolet include 17-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension and a chrome trim to the grille.

Inside, the Australian-delivered Cabrio gets dual zone climate control automatic air conditioning, comfort front seats with rear seat easy entry aid, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and “Matte Chrome” decorative inserts.

Rear storage is listed at 250 litres. This area grows with the rear seats laid flat, thanks to a small pass-through hole.
