Volkswagen's all-new 2012 Beetle has made its online debut today, just days before its combined unveiling at the Shanghai and New York Auto Shows on April 21 and April 22.

Much of the new Beetle's styling has been revealed already through spy photos obtained in recent months. But while the new Bug's roofline, bonnet and guards were the standout changes, the headlights and taillights had until now remained camouflaged.

While the Beetle has kept all of its trademark features, the 2012 model takes on a more masculine look, replacing the bubble styling of its predecessor with a more masculine look.

There's a sharper coupe-like roofline that harks back to the original Beetle, along with tougher guards, a longer and flatter bonnet, 911-style headlights and shapelier, more defined taillights.

The new design brings more advantages than just a sportier look, with the longer roof and more distinct C-pillar meaning that passengers familiar with the previous model will be greeted by a noticeable increase in rear headroom.

The improved space in the rear is also thanks to the new Beetle's longer body, measuring around 150mm longer than its predecessor. The wheelbase has also grown, although Volkswagen hasn't offered any numbers here.

The 2012 Beetle is also a good 84mm wider than the previous 'New Beetle', and its overall height has been cut by 15mm.

The Beetle will be offered with a range of engines internationally, but in Australia we can expect to see Volkswagen's 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Producing 150kW and 280Nm of torque in Beetle trim. the turbo engine will be paired with both six-speed manual and six-speed DSG automatic transmissions.
