2012 Viper: Out With The Dodge Badge, In With SRT

The Chrysler Group has confirmed that its hero Dodge Viper will soon be a Dodge no more, with next year's all-new model set to debut as the flagship of the new standalone SRT brand.

The SRT name has long accompanied the top-shelf performance models in the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep families, but like HSV and FPV in Australia, the badge was spun off this year into its own brand.

The Chrysler Group's "Street And Racing Technology" division was born out of the Viper project and has since been given the task of tuning the range-topping Chrysler 300C, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Charger, and the Viper itself, among others.

Given its origins, it's no surprise that the new Viper will lead the new brand's line-up, where it will likely be joined by new SRT-only versions of the division's current co-badged models.

Details on the new Viper remain locked away for now, although Chrysler has confirmed that the hero of SRT will make its debut at the New York Auto Show in April.

Reports suggest that the new Viper will retain its 10-cylinder setup (as it should), although the brand has yet to offer any word on that front.
