2012 TOYOTA AURION
Slated for an Australian debut in the second quarter of 2012, the new Aurion will continue the formula of its predecessor, borrowing much of the sheet metal and underpinnings from the 'smaller' Camry.
While the glasshouse, doors and rear quarter panels carry over unchanged from the Camry, the 2012 Aurion gets its own unique face and rear.
There are new front quarter panels, new headlights - more angular than the Camry's eyes - along with a new bonnet design, a taller grille and a more understated front bumper.
The story is the same at the rear, with the Aurion dropping the Camry's hooked tail-lights in favour of a larger and simpler design.
In the cabin, both cars share the same steering wheel and door panels, but the Aurion gets its own dash, replacing the tiered look with a smoothed-over style and prominent wood-grained inserts (depending on the spec)
There's also a more streamlined look for the centre stack, wrapped in a sharp blade-like chrome frame.
Power for the new Aurion will be provided by an updated version of the existing 3.5 litre V6, producing 204kW and 346Nm of torque - compared to 200kW and 336Nm for the current Australian-market Aurion.
While Australian figures are still be to confirmed, fuel consumption for the 3.5 litre engine has also improved, dropping from 9.9 l/100km to 9.3 l/100km.
The savings come not only from the revised engine, but also through the new Aurion weighing 50kg less than the current model.
Thanks to high fleet sales and a strong reputation among private buyers, the Camry is consistently a top seller in the medium segment. In July, Toyota sold 1372 Camrys locally, demolishing its nearest competitor, the Ford Mondeo with 562 sales.
For Toyota Australia, the new Aurion can't get here soon enough.
