Suzuki has announced the launch of its new Swift Sport range-topper in Australia, priced in-line with its predecessor and driven by an updated version of the same 1.6 litre engine.

Starting at $23,990 (plus on-roads) for the manual model, the Swift Sport will square off against Hyundai's Veloster sports hatch.

Based on the regular Swift five-door hatch, the new Sport draws its styling inspiration from last year's S-Concept. The flared guards and super-tough body kit are gone, but the aggressive new front bumper remains a faithful facsimile.

Power for the new Sport is provided by a revised version of the M16A 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol engine that drove the previous model, delivering 100kW at 6900rpm and 160Nm at 4400rpm.

That's 30kW and 30Nm more than the regular 1.4 litre Swift, and 8kW/12Nm more than its sporting predecessor. Suzuki says the new model also boasts a kerb weight 30kg lighter than the old Sport.

With relatively low power, weight savings are sought wherever they can be found, and even the Swift Sport's wheels are 1kg lighter each, thanks to a new "flow form" manufacturing process.

Performance figures for the new model have not been released, but overseas tests have returned 0-100km/h times in the 8.0 to 8.5-seconds range when mated to the Sport's new six-speed manual transmission.

For those that prefer to have the car swap its own cogs, a CVT automatic transmission is also available, offering paddle shifters and a seven-speed manual mode.

In manual form, the new Sport lists fuel consumption figures of 6.5 l/100km on the combined cycle, with the CVT the most frugal option at 6.1 l/100km - both an improvement over the 7.3 l/100km of the previous model.

Apart from its more powerful engine, the Sport moniker is earned through its stiffer springs - 15 percent stiffer up front and 30 percent more at the rear - along with additional springs on the front struts.

Suzuki has also given the torsion beam rear suspension a going-over, promising improved directional stability. There's also greater lateral stiffness in the mounting bushes, larger bearings in the wheels and a tougher trailing arm.

Standard features in the new Swift Sport include sports seats, leather steering wheel, cruise control, Bluetooth phone use, USB audio connectivity, climate control air-con and keyless entry and start.

Safety features include seven airbags, electronic stability control, ABS and electronic brake-force distribution. The Swift Sport carries 5-Star ANCAP safety rating.
