SsangYong's 2012 Actyon Sports ute is now on sale in Australia. The new ute kicks off with a higher entry price, but gains a slew of new features and a greener, more powerful diesel engine.

Revealed at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2012 Actyon Sport brings a fresh new face and new tail-lights, while retaining much of its predecessor's design.

The new model debuted in concept form as the SUT-1 and is sold in its South Korean homeland as the Korando Sports, alongside the Korando passenger SUV.

"The new Korando showcased an entirely fresh style for the brand and the new Actyon Sports takes on this new ‘family’ look," SsangYong Australia General Manager, Jeff Barber, said.

"We’ve completely moved away from the simple characteristics and overt styling of the previous model and now offer all the latest technology for a sub-$30k price level."

Mechanical Package

The Korean-made 2012 Actyon Sports is powered by SsangYong's new 2.0 litre e-XDi200 turbodiesel engine, which it shares with the Korando SUV.

The new turbodiesel delivers 114kW and 360Nm of torque, the latter coming on between 1500 and 2800rpm.

For power and torque, the new engine is up 14kW and 50Nm. The peak torque is also available 300rpm earlier than with the old - and larger - 2.2 litre diesel.

In 2WD Tradie and SX form, the e-XDi200 engine delivers fuel consumption figures of 7.3 l/100km, rising to 7.4 l/100km for the 4WD Tradie and Sports, 7.6 l/100km for the automatic-equipped 2WD and 7.9 l/100km for the top-shelf 4WD automatic SPR variant.

By comparison, the outgoing model lists 8.0 and 8.7 l/100km for the manual and automatic versions of both the 2WD and 4WD utes.

The 2WD Tradie and SX variants list CO2 emissions at 192g/km, and the 4WD Tradie and Sports at 195g/km.

Depending on specification (see price list at bottom of article), six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are offered, with the latter getting a manual mode.

The new Actyon Sports' suspension package gets it double wishbones at the front, and there's a five-link arrangement at the rear.

The new pickup is similar in size to the outgoing Actyon Sports, measuring 4990mm long, 1910mm wide and 1790mm tall, riding on a 3060mm wheelbase.

That means the new model is 25mm longer, 10mm wider and 35mm taller than its predecessor.

Braked towing capacity for the new Actyon Sports ute is listed at 2300kg, identical to the outgoing model.

SsangYong says it has also improved the Actyon Sports ute's NVH, with a new engine cover and a double-layer construction and soundproofing for the dashboard, along with slanted engine mounts to minimise vibration.

Features

Standard features in the redesigned cabin include a new LED-lit instrument cluster and trip computer with time driven, distance travelled, distance to empty, and average fuel consumption.

The range also features Bluetooth connectivity as standard with steering-mounted controls, which can be used for phone calls and music streaming.

Depending on the variant, other features include air conditioning, power steering, power windows, remote keyless entry, USB/aux connectivity, heated side mirrors, variable speed intermittent wipers, four-speaker CD/MP3 audio system, steering-mounted audio controls, sunglasses holder, drink holder, floor mats, door scuff plate, power outlets, and a protective liner in the cargo space.

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, seatbelt pretensioner and load limiter, three child-seat anchors with two isofix points.

Alloy wheels, cruise control, leather steering wheel, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) are standard on SX and SPR models.

The SPR variant adds leather seating, climate control, rear sensors, 18-inch alloys, electronically adjustable front seats, folding side mirrors, dimming rear-view mirror, auto wipers and headlights, and headlamp levelling. An electric sunroof is available as an option.

The new Ssangyong Actyon Sports Dual Cab Ute has a three year/100,000km warranty, along with 24/7 roadside assistance for the first three years of ownership.
