Skoda's oddball Roomster small wagon is again available in Australia, returning this week after sluggish sales saw it dropped from the range in 2010.

To kickstart this second coming, the Roomster gets refreshed styling and a new engine. At a starting price of $22,490, it also undercuts its previous price by over $4000.

The Roomster five-seater will be offered in one trim grade, driven by Volkswagen's familiar 77TSI petrol engine matched to a manual and, for the first time, a DSG automatic transmission.

Mechanical Package and Dimensions

Power for the Roomster is provided by a direct-injected and turbocharged 1.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 77kW and 175Nm of torque.

In both five-speed manual and seven-speed DSG automatic/tiptronic form, the engine lists fuel consumption figures of 5.9 l/100km.

Compared to the previous car's 1.6 litre engine, the 77TSI unit offers 22Nm more torque, and fuel consumption that is improved by 1.1 l/100km.

The Roomster rides on McPherson struts up front, with a semi-independent arrangement at the rear, while the slightly wider rear track is designed to contribute to the car's cornering.

There's an electrohydraulic power steering system, and Skoda lists a 10.5 metre turning circle.

Measuring 4214mm long and 1684mm wide, and riding on a 2608mm wheelbase, the Roomster is a touch shorter and narrower than the 4223/1793mm Yeti SUV, but sits on a 30mm longer wheelbase.

Inside, the tall Roomster offers generous 1029mm of headroom up front (1009mm in the rear), and despite its 'small car' footprint, storage is equally capacious.

In the back, there's up to 450 litres with the rear seats up, depending on the Varioflex seating system's configuration, and 1555 litres with the seats laid flat.

Remove the rear seats all together - again thanks to the Varioflex system - and rear storage grows to a van-like 1780 litres.

Offered in one trim grade, the Roomster's standard features include air conditioning, central locking, power windows front and rear, CD/MP3 'Swing' radio with auxiliary an Bluetooth connectivity.

There's also a front armrest, a folding table in rear middle backrest, black roof rails, and a leather steering wheel with audio and phone controls.

Optional features include rear parking sensors, upgraded audio system, climate control, privacy glass from B-pillar, alarm, partial leather seats, front foglights with daytime running lights, panoramic sunroof, luggage partition net and a coloured roof (Candy White, Brilliant Silver, Black Magic).

Standard safety featues include Curtain airbags and side front airbags ESC Plus (including ABS, MSR, ASR, EDS, HBA, HHC).

Local crash testing has not been conducted by ANCAP, but the Roomster carries a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Roomster - 77TSI 5-speed manual - $22,490
Roomster - 77TSI 7-speed DSG - $24,790

Note: prices exclude on-road costs.
