Porsche's all-new ninth-generation 911 Coupe and Cabriolet are now available in Australia. The range starts at $229,900 for the Carrera Coupe and tops out at $294,250 for the Carrera S Cabriolet.
The new model, known internally as the 991, continues the evolutionary design language of Porsche's iconic sports car, but rest assured: even if you can't tell right away, the 2012 911 is a new beast in every way.
Longer than its predecessor by 56mm (on a 100mm-stretched wheelbase), the new 911's stand-out styling features include new bumper designs at both ends, with more upright headlights, slimmer taillights and even fatter haunches than before.
There's a longer and lower roofline, and the side mirrors are now rooted beneath the belt line, rather than in the very corner of the A-pillar.
The entry Carrera variants are powered by a 3.4 litre direct-injected flat-six engine - falling from the previous model's 3.6 litres - with output listed at 257kW and 390Nm of torque.
For the top-shelf (for now) Carrera S, power comes from a 3.8 litre direct-injected flat-six delivering 294kW and 440Nm.
Both variants will be offered with either a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, or the new seven-speed manual transmission teased in earlier announcements.
Porsche says then when paired with the PDK transmission, the Carrera will hit 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and 4.4 seconds with the special Sport Plus option ticked at the dealership.
The Carrera S powers to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds with the PDK transmission, and 4.1 with the Sport Plus pack. The seven-speed manual will get you there in 4.5 seconds.
Fuel consumption is also improved for both, falling to 9.0 l/100km for the Carrera and 9.5 l/100km for the Carrera S.
The savings are achieved largely through the use of the seven-speed transmissions, but also through an auto stop/start system, electrical system recuperation, electro-mechanical steering, and improved thermal management.
Physically, the new 911 is 45kg lighter than the outgoing model, thanks in part to a new aluminium-steel body design - which also brings significantly improved rigidity.
The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active roll stabilisation system is also available for the first time on the Carrera S.
The PDCC system is designed to reduce body-roll in cornering, keeping the tyres in the optimal position to the road surface and increasing cornering speeds.
Braking is managed by four-piston calipers and 330mm discs on the Carrera, growing to 340mm discs with the Carrera S.
