2012 Opel Zafira Concept Hints At Production Future

If German carmaker Opel is planning a full portfolio when it arrives in Australia next year, the 2012 Zafira people-mover could be among its offerings.

Sold in Australia from 2001 as the first-generation Holden Zafira, the Vectra-faced Zafira did not perform well enough in the local market to see a second generation. 

That could change in 2012 however, with the stylish third-generation Zafira revealed in concept form ahead of next month's Geneva Motor Show.

The new Zafira concept draws more than a few design cues from the Ampera, Opel's version of the Chevrolet Volt, including its extended headlight housings and wide-open air dam.

The top half of the Zafira concept is dominated by a spacious greenhouse with a panoramic windscreen and roof, while the rear end gets stylish high-mounted taillights and sports-focused dual exhaust tips.

"We have transferred the idea of a relaxing lounge to a vehicle and created an automobile wellness oasis, a place to relax and enjoy," Mark Adams, Opel's Vice President of Design, said.

"Passengers can retreat in the lounge. It is a comfortable, roomy space where you really want to be – regardless if it’s for a business trip or to relax for a long journey."

Inside, the 2012 Zafira concept offers seating for seven, although a number of configurations are available thanks to Opel's Flex7 system, including a 'lounge mode' with room for four to work or relax.

The new Zafira is expected to debut in production form at September's Frankfurt Motor Show, but for now, more details will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
