Nissan has released the first of seven teaser images for its upcoming 2012 Pathfinder, in the lead-up to its unveiling at next month's Detroit Auto Show.

Official details are thin on the ground, but it is known that the new SUV will utilise the same car-like unibody platform underpinning the new Infiniti JX and the existing Murano, along with the US-market Maxima and Altima cars.

The move away from the more rugged body-on-frame construction of its predecessor means the new Pathfinder will become more of a softroader, focusing on hauling its seven occupants in greater comfort than before.

From this teaser image and through earlier spy photos, it's clear that the new model will take on a more rounded shape, marking the end for three generations of boxy Pathfinders.

Nissan says that the concept we'll see at Detroit will offer a solid preview of the new Pathfinder, which is expected to make its international production debut late in 2012.
