It's been a while since Mercedes' next-generation SL reared its head on public roads. These new spy photos, showing a barely-camouflaged test car, reveal that a debut might not be far away.

The larger stablemate to the sports-focused SLK, the 2012 SL maintains its grand-tourer proportions while adopting Mercedes' new upright grille and swept-back headlights.

The test car shown here sits lower than the current generation SL, while a broader face and back-end suggests a wider track for the new model.

Power for the next-generation SL-Class will likely come from Merc's new 3.5 litre V6 and 4.6 litre V8 engines, with power figures ranging from 225kW and 368Nm to 320kW and 700Nm.

The hero SLS AMG's seven-speed DCT transmission will likely feature in the new SL, along with a number of its suspension and electrical components.

Watch for this one to debut in the early part of 2012.
