2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Revealed In Mystery Photo

Mercedes-Benz' all-new 2012 B-Class mini-mpv has been spied in Europe this week without a shred of camouflage. This new photo, source unknown, appeared online today.

The image reveals styling similar to the upcoming 2012 A-Class hatch - with which it shares its 'MFA' platform - with Mercedes' new elongated tail-lights and sharp swooping character lines along its profile.

Details and specifications for the new B-Class haven't been revealed, but a report in German magazine Auto Bild suggests that one unique feature will see sliding rear seats that allow for greater leg space or, when needed, increased cargo capacity.

Powertrains are expected to be sourced from both Mercedes and engine and platform partner Renault-Nissan, ranging from 80kW petrol and 90kW diesel engines, through to 150kW petrol and diesel engines. 

As with many of Mercedes' upcoming next-generation models, alternative-energy variants are also expected to appear in the future.

According to Mercedes' A- and B-Class development boss Jorg Prigl, the company's 'MFA' platform architecture is so versatile that it will allow for the installation of a battery pack, a fuel cell stack, hydrogen tanks and compressed natural gas (think LPG) tanks.

Mercedes will reportedly also offer a sedan version of the B-Class, along with a BMW X1- and Audi Q3-rivalling crossover.

Speculation of a sedan version of the B-Class is not new, however a report this week by British magazine Auto Express suggests a launch for the 'BLS' sometime in 2014.
