Land Rover's updated-for-2012 Defender, announced for the European market earlier this week, will make its way to Australian showrooms in December.

For 2012, the Defender line-up gets a new 2.2 litre turbodiesel engine, replacing the current 2.4 litre diesel.

With a focus on cleaner running, the capacity of the new Euro 5 emissions-compliant engine is virtually the only new number, with output unchanged at 90kW and 360Nm of torque.

CO2 emissions for the Defender 90 are listed at 266g/km, and 295g/km for the Defender 110 and 130 models.

The current model's GFT MT 82 six-speed transmission carries over. The new engine's performance figures are also in-line with the outgoing diesel - although top speed has increased from 132km/h to 145km/h.

The 110 single cab chassis has also been discontinued for 2012, bringing the total number of variants down to eight.

In Europe, two new option packages have been added to the Defender range: Comfort and Off-Road.

For the Comfort pack, buyers gain air-conditioning, power windows, remote central locking and a CD player with aux connectivity. The Off-Road pack offers ABS, a heavy-duty wheel and tyre package, a tow ball and an under-ride protection bar.

Australian availability of these option packages is still to be confirmed. Likewise, pricing for the updated Defender will be announced in the coming weeks.
