Jeep's updated Compass SUV is now on sale in Australia, following its international unveiling last year as part of a range-wide overhaul of the Chrysler Group's line-up.

The "new" Compass brings a smoothed-out Grand Cherokee style to the smaller end of Jeep's line-up, where it sits alongside the ruggedly-styled Patriot - but at a lower price point.

Re-joining the Australian range after a three-year absence, the Compass gets Jeep's redesigned family face and a makeover in the cabin, featuring new soft-touch materials and a new steering wheel with wheel-mounted control

Mechanical Package

Power is provided by a pair of 2.0 and 2.4 litre petrol engines, with the range-topping Limited variant available with the 2.4 litre mill only.

The entry-level 2.0 litre engine produces 115kW at 6300rpm and 190Nm of torque at 5100rpm.

The 2.4 litre petrol engine, also featured in the Patriot, delivers marginally higher numbers: 125kW at 6000rpm and 220kW at 4500rpm.

Depending on the variant, transmissions include a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic with a manual shift mode.

In 2.0 litre form, fuel consumption for the manual is listed at 7.6 l/100km, while the automatic returns 8.2 l/100km.

For the 2.4 litre engine, fuel consumption is listed at 8.5 l/100km for manual models, and 8.6 l/100km for the CVT auto.

Four- and two-wheel-drive configurations are also available in the manual and CVT versions of the Sport model, while the top-shelf Limited variant is available in CVT 4WD trim only.

The four-wheel-drive system is Chrysler's Freedom-Drive system, delivering on-demand all-wheel traction, along with a selectable Lock mode.

The suspension package across the range includes MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. Braking is managed by 294mm ventilated discs at the front and 262mm solids at the rear.
