Jaguar's updated 2012 XF sedan has been spied more than a few times in recent months, hiding a XJ-like facelift up front and an updated rear.

This week, Jaguar has confirmed that a new 2.2 litre diesel engine will debut with the updated XF at the New York Auto Show next month, producing 139kW and 450Nm of torque.

In Australia, the current XF is offered with 3.0 litre V6 and 5.0 litre V8 petrol engines, along with a 3.0 litre turbodiesel engine that offers 202kW and 600Nm of torque.

It remains to be seen if the 2.2 litre diesel will make its way to Australia, but with the 3.0 litre diesel priced at $99,900, the new smaller diesel could potentially make the diesel XF even more affordable.

The new diesel is based on the 2.2 litre engine used in the European-market Ford Mondeo and the Land Rover Freelander, and features a water-cooled turbocharger, low-friction pistons, a new crankshaft and new injectors.

Jaguar has also added stop-start technology to the engine, and combined with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, the British carmaker says the engine will return fuel consumption figures of 5.4 l/100km.

In the XF, the diesel engine sees the 0-100km/h sprint knocked over in 8.5 seconds.

A sales debut for the new engine has still to be confirmed, although more details will be revealed at New York next month.
