Hyundai has revealed the first image of its fighter in the next-generation small hatch segment, the 2012 Hyundai i30. The artwork follows a series of spy photos published earlier this year.

The new small hatch will make its global debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, with an Australian debut likely to occur early next year.

Replacing the first-generation i30, which hit the scene in 2007 and racked up more than a few awards, the 2012 i30 will have its work cut out for it.

“The next generation i30 will play an important role in continuing the development of the Hyundai brand in Australia,” Oliver Mann, Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s Director of Marketing said.

“We launched the current i30 in late 2007 and since then the car has been recognised with numerous awards, including an Australia’s ‘Best Small Car’ award for three years running.”

Shown here in a very telling preview rendering, the new i30 will carry Hyundai's 'fluidic sculpture' styling language, first seen with the i45 medium sedan and worn most recently by the new Elantra and Accent small cars.

At the front-end, there is little to tell the new i30 apart from its Elantra sedan counterpart, with a virtually (but not quite) identical headlight and grille design surrounded by a unique foglight housing.

“The hexagonal appearance is unique to Hyundai, with the jewel-like front headlamps which flank the grille adding a strong personality to the vehicle, as well as a sense of refinement and luxury,” Thomas Burkle, Hyundai's chief designer said.

Along the profile and toward the rear, the new small hatch features the now-familiar and heavily creased character lines of the newer Hyundai line-up, shared with the Elantra, Accent, i20 and i45.

Little else has been revealed at this early stage, with Hyundai staying quiet until Frankfurt. Watch this space.
