Hyundai's updated i20 has been revealed this week, following a handful of telling spy shots obtained by TMR's tame photographers earlier this year.

The facelifted light hatch arrives as the brand moves away from the design of its older volume sellers, replaced by the latest evolution of Hyundai's "Fluidic Sculpture" styling language.

The standout changes can be seen at the front end, with a new grille and bumper design flanked by new headlights inspired by the likes of the Elantra, Accent and all-new i30 small car.

The taillights have also been given a light going-over, with a new internal design and lens covers that poke out a little further from the rear end's profile.

The international debut of the updated i20 follows a similar update to the smaller i10 (not offered in Australia), which saw Hyundai's new styling language replace the city car's older front-end styling.

Among the four European-market engines for the updated i20 will be Hyundai's new 55kW 1.1-litre, three-cylinder 'U-II' diesel engine, with carbon emissions listed at a low 84g/km when paired with Hyundai's Blue Drive technologies.



Speaking with TMR today, Hyundai Australia's Stephen Howard confirmed that the updated i20 will make its local debut in mid-2012.

Exact timing and details will be revealed closer to launch.
