2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe To Get Power Boost: Report

The prophecised Australian debut of Hyundai's Genesis Coupe is still a generation away, but we can at least be sure of some pleasing performance figures when it arrives.

According to the USA's Inside Line, both engines driving the updated-for-2012 Genesis Coupe will get new technologies and a healthy power boost.

In the US, the Genesis Coupe is currently offered with either a naturally-aspirated 3.8 litre V6 petrol engine or a turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine.

For 2012, Hyundai will reportedly boost the the V6's power from 234 to 248kW - updates already revealed for the Coupe's Genesis sedan stablemate.

Direct injection and a higher compression ratio will be used to help the V6 achieve greater power and better fuel consumption figures.

The four-cylinder turbo's output is also expected to grow, although the report did not offer numbers. For now, the turbo coupe offers a reasonable 157kW and 302Nm of torque.

The Coupe is also expected to get a major styling update, with spy photos in recent months revealing a heavily-camouflaged test car. New headlights and tail-lights are likely, along with a new grille and bumper design at both ends.

The Coupe's unique rear quarter window design is unlikely to change.

An Australia debut for the Genesis Coupe has so far been stonewalled by the absence of a right-hand-drive version.

Thanks to pressure from the UK market however, Hyundai is understood to have green-lit the development of a right-hooker.

Whether that version will show up in the current generation or, a few years from now in the second-gen Coupe, remains to be seen.
