Honda has introduced its all-new European-built Civic Hatch to Australia this week, following its Frankfurt Motor Show unveiling in 2011.

Kicking off at $22,650 for the entry-level VTi-S manual, the Hatch carries a $1660 premium over the Thail-built Civic Sedan, but cuts $7340 from the Hatch's previous entry price.

As an introductory offer, the VTi-S manual carries a drive-away price of $24,990. In automatic form, the VTi-S is priced at $24,950 plus on-roads, with a drive-away offer of $27,290.

Topping the two-model line-up is the VTi-L automatic, priced at $29,990, plus on-roads. No locked-in drive-away price is offered with this variant.

Mechanical Package

As with the Sedan VTi-L, the new Civic Hatch is powered by Honda's updated 1.8 litre four-cylinder engine, producing 104kW at 6500rpm, and 174Nm of torque at 4300rpm.

Fuel consumption is listed at 6.1 l/100km in six-speed manual form, and 6.5 l/100km with the five-speed automatic. Honda's fuel-saving Eco Assist, Econ Mode and improved aerodynamics are featured.

Honda says it has responded to customer feedback by delivering a smoother engine, improved ride and handling, and a quieter cabin. (Watch for TMR's review.)

The Civic Hatch's suspension features MacPherson struts up front, and a torsion beam arrangement up back. Braking is managed by ventilated discs at the front, and solid discs at the rear.

There are also fluid-filled rear bushings for improved noise/vibration/harshness.

Riding on a 30mm-shorter wheelbase, the new Civic is nonetheless larger on the outside, measuring 30mm longer, 20mm lower and 10mm wider than its predecessor. The front and rear tracks are wider too, measuring 1535mm at both ends.

Storage capacity in the rear is listed at 390 litres with the rear seats up, and 1120 litres with the 'Magic Seats' folded flat.

Standard features include USB and iPod connectivity, climate control, hill-start assist, tyre pressure monitor and alloy wheels.

The up-spec VTi-L adds cruise control, dual-zone climate control, reversing camera, automatic headlights and wipers, fog lights, larger wheels and Bluetooth audio streaming.

All have a black interior; the VTi-L gets leather trim and heated front seats.

The new Civic Hatch carries a five-star ANCAP crash safety racing.
