2012 HOLDEN COLORADO

Holden's challenger to the upcoming 2012 Ford Ranger has been revealed in pre-production concept form this week as the Chevrolet Colorado Concept.

Scheduled to make its world debut at the Bangkok International Auto Show on March 25, GM says the Chevrolet Colorado concept offers a close look at what we can expect from the next-generation pick-up when it hits the market.

"Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions and form convey the vision for the next-generation Colorado that we will bring to market," Brad Merkel, GM Global Vehicle Line Executive said.

"It reflects a stylised version of the new truck, one that takes into account rugged dependable truck capabilities for commercial use as well as sophisticated refinement for personal-use needs."

Technical details remain a tightly-held secret, but the 2012 Colorado concept shown here features an extended-cab body, underpinned by an AWD layout and large 20-inch wheels.

How much of the concept will make its way to production is unclear, and while the 20-inch wheels may appear on a top-shelf Wildtrak rival, the concept-styled mirrors and headlight internals will likely go through some changes.

The showcar theme continues inside, with the futuristic centre stack and on-screen menu illuminated in the same ice blue featured in the Holden Cruze.

GM describes a 2.8 litre turbodiesel engine for the Chevrolet Colorado, although Holden's 2012 Colorado range will likely also include the existing Alloytec V6, or the newer SIDI petrol options.

As for the look of the Chevrolet Colorado's Australian-market counterpart, we can expect to see the 'Chev' grille swapped out for a Holden-badged face.

As our rendering below shows, a grille similar to the Cruze Series II would do the job nicely.
