Ford has today released a full run of details for the Australian-market 2012 'LW' Focus, ahead of the new model's AIMS debut in July and sales launch in August.

The all-new Focus will hit Australian roads in five-door hatch and four-door sedan bodystyles, with four trim grades available: the entry-level Ambiente, followed by the mid-range Trend, the dynamic Sport and the top-shelf Titanium.

Ford buyers will be familiar with the Titanium badge, which also represents the range-topping model in the Mondeo and Territory line-ups.

Standout features for the 2012 Focus include Active Park Assist, Torque Vectoring Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Voice Control, Bi-Xenon headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

Powertrains will include Ford's new 2.0 litre direct-injected GDi (gasoline direct injection) petrol engine and the overhauled 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine - both available with Ford's six-speed Powershift automatic transmission.

Powertrains And Mechanical Package

Engines

The 2012 Focus will be offered with three engine options, spearheaded by the company's 2.0 litre direct-injected GDi petrol engine, producing 125kW and 202Nm of torque.

The new engine represents a 17 percent improvement in power and a nine percent improvement in torque over the outgoing model, which offered 107kW and 185Nm.

Fuel consumption for the 2.0 litre petrol engine is rated at 6.6 l/100km in the PowerShift-equipped Trend and Sport variants.

Paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the engine uses 7.2 l/100km.

A 1.6 litre Duratec Ti-VCT petrol engine will also be available, positioned as the fuel economy leader in the 2012 Focus range.

Producing 92kW and 159Nm of torque, the engine will be offered with a five-speed manual (6.2 l/100km) and the six-speed PowerShift transmission (Identical to the 2.0 litre engine; 6.6 l/100km).

Ford's updated and Euro V-compliant 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine will round out the engine options, paired exclusively with the PowerShift auto. Fuel consumption is listed at 5.5 l/100km.

Mechanical Package

On the suspension front, Ford's engineers have developed a new optimised 'Control Blade' multilink rear suspension, and semi-isolated front and rear subframes.

The front MacPherson strut arrangement features lighter, weight-optimised front lower control arms, along with a new hollow anti-roll bar, improved damper valve technology and optimised bushes for reduced noise and vibration in the cabin.

At the rear, there's increased diameter dampers, larger hub bearings for increased camber stiffness and similarly optimised bushes for improved NVH.

A new Electric Power Assist Steering system features in the new Focus, which Ford says has been tuned to provide "pure and precise" responses at high speed, remaining light and manoeuvrable for parking.

Developed by Ford of Europe, a new Dynamic Cornering Control system transfers power between the drive wheels to reduce understeer, as well as improve traction and turn-in.

The new Focus also makes use of more high-strength steels than any previous model in the Ford line-up, with up to 55 percent of the vehicle's structure benefiting from the ultra-strong materials.

Features And Equipment

In Australia, the new Focus will be offered (depending on the variant) with Active Park Assist, cruise control with Adjustable Speed Limiting Device, Adaptive Cruise Control, and keyless entry with push-button start.

With the drive responsible for (guided) acceleration and braking, Ford's Active Park Assist can automatically steer the Focus into a parallel parking space just 20 percent longer than the vehicle itself.

The system is supported by an intelligent computer system and two ultrasonic sensors.

Sport and Titanium models will feature a new Sony premium audio system, featuring nine speakers, a 4.2-inch colour TFT multi-functional display, MP3/USB/aux connectivity, remote audio and MFD controls, and audio streaming.

Other features include:

  • Smart Key and Ford Power Start Button – standard on Titanium models, providing keyless entry to the vehicle, and keyless start using the Power button.
  • Easy-Fuel – fitted as standard to all models, the capless refuelling system is designed to prevent the driver filling a petrol car with diesel, and vice-versa.
  • Heated front seats – standard on Titanium models.
  • Automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers – standard on Sport and Titanium models, and available on Trend models as part of the optional Convenience Pack.
  • Rear parking aid sensors – standard on Trend, Sport and Titanium models.
  • Front parking aid sensors – Titanium models also feature front parking aid sensors as part of the Active Park Assist system.

Safety Equipment

This week, the new Focus was awarded a 5-Star crash safety rating by Euro NCAP, the sister programme to Australia's ANCAP. Local scores have yet to be confirmed.

Passive safety features include driver and front passenger airbags, side front airbags and side curtain airbags for front- and rear-seat occupants.

In the new Focus, a new horizontal stroking steering column helps to reduce loads on the occupant’s head and chest by stroking away from the driver in the event of a high speed frontal impact.

Other standard features, forming park of the Dynamic Stability Control system, include:

  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) including Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Corner Brake Control (CBC)
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Electronic Brake Prefill (EBP) and Emergency Brake Warning
  • Traction Control System (TCS) comprising Engine Traction Control System (ETCS) and Brake Lock Differential (BLD)
  • Torque Vectoring Control (TVC)

  • Hydraulic Rear-Axle Boost (HRB)
  • Hill Launch Assist (HLA)
