2012 FORD FALCON FG MKII

Ford Australia has whipped the covers off the long-awaited update to the Falcon family, ahead of its showroom debut later this year.

The arrival of the FG MkII will also mark the debut of Ford's global 2.0 litre four-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine in the Falcon (due in early 2012), along with a revised face and a host of new features.

"The improvements we're making to the award-winning Falcon range with the introduction of FG Falcon MkII will make a great Australian car even better," Ford Australia President & CEO Bob Graziano said.

"FG Falcon MkII builds on the success of the FG Falcon program, as well as the recently released new Territory range, by offering customers more equipment and the latest technology innovations, while continuing to deliver outstanding performance, fuel efficiency, refinement and safety."

Styling

Walking up to the Falcon FG MkII, the most obvious change is its Territory- and Mondeo-inspired facelift.

The Falcon's headlights remain unchanged (except for the addition of projectors for up-spec models), but the grille is now shorter top-to-bottom and  features a new wing-like chrome highlight.

The real standout change however is the lower grille, resculpted and stretched upward, closing the gap with its northern neighbour.

Higher-grade variants also gain LED daytime running lights on each side of the lower grille.

These slots are left blank for lower models, while the XR variants retain regular fog lights here.

Depending on the spec and options ticked, other external updates include new and bigger wheel designs (19-inch for the XR6 Turbo), chrome highlights and new badging.

Mechanical Package

Figures for the new engine's Falcon specifications have not been released, but in the updated Mondeo, the 2.0 litre engine produces 149kW and 300Nm of torque.

Overseas, the same engine is available with a higher tune for both the Mondeo and the Range Rover Evoque, delivering 177kW and 339Nm of torque.

In Australia, the 2.0 litre engine will be offered alongside the Falcon's current 4.0 litre inline-six petrol engine for all but the G6 E Turbo  and XR variants.

Surprising no-one, Ford has also confirmed that the four-cylinder engine will not be offered with any of the Falcon Ute variants.

Features and Equipment

Inside, the Falcon FG MkII picks up a new instrument cluster design and a new 8-inch colour touch-screen "Interior Command Centre".

The new touch screen interface replaces the remote control-based operation of the outgoing system.

The new touch-screen navigation system includes the following features:

  • “Green routing” - calculates the most economical route, as well as the fastest and shortest routes available
  • Choice of 2D or 3D map modes
  • Overspeed and speed camera warnings
  • “Where Am I” feature to show nearby points of interest
  • Street house numbers left and right displayed
  • Advanced lane guidance and signpost information indicating which lane to use
  • “Junction view” showing graphical representation of road
  • Traffic Message Channel (TMC)

While Holden's updated VE II Commodore offers a 6.5-inch colour touch-screen across the entire range, the Falcon's ICC screen will be standard with all but the fleet-focused XT sedan and XL ute - where it will be offered as an option.

Entertainment features are improved across the range, with USB connectivity now standard.

Safety upgrades include the addition of side curtain airbags across the sedan range, and side airbags to the Ute range. Rear parking sensors are also now standard, while the optional Luxury Pack for XR models adds a reverse camera.

The FG MkII range also includes a new 'Generation 9.0' Dynamic Stability Control system, incorporating Traction Control, Emergency Brake Assist, and Anti-lock Braking. This system is also standard with the Falcon Ute range.
