BMW has officially revealed images and details of its all-new 2012 M5 performance sedan, just hours after a handful of images and details surfaced online.

The new M5 borrows its powerplant from the X5 M and X6 M performance SUVs, the 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 415kW at 6000rpm and 680Nm of torque from 1500rpm, bettering its predecessor by a hefty 30kW and 150Nm.

Importantly, this is the first M5 to be offered with a turbocharged heart, replacing the previous model's naturally-aspirated V10 engine.

Unlike the six-speed auto in the M SUVs, the new M5 is paired with a seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission, whisking the big sedan to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds.

The 200km/h mark comes down in 13 seconds, on the way to a 250km/h electronically-limited top speed.

Tick the 'M Driver' package and a claimed 305km/h top speed is unlocked.

A manual transmission is also expected to appear in the new M5 line-up, although its 0-100km/h time is unlikely to be much quicker than the auto - if at all.

Fuel consumption is listed at 9.9 l/100km, a 30 percent improvement over the 'E60' M5.

Standard equipment for the new M5 includes the M division's performance-specialised sports suspension, along with lightweight compound brakes and M servotronic electric steering.

A programmable driver-assist system is also featured, allowing the driver to save two preferred driving modes with tweaks available for accelerator response, steering response, Drivelogic shift program, Dynamic Damper Control and Dynamic Stability modes.

The 2012 M5 will make its global debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but as with the new 1 Series, official details could be released in the coming weeks.

Australia

Speaking with TMR today, BMW Australia's Lucy McLellan said that the company's local arm is hopeful for a late 2011 launch, however a debut in the first quarter of 2011 is also possible.
