Audi's all-new 2012 A6 large sedan has made its local sales debut this week, headlining the company's stand at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne.

On the styling front, the new A6 adheres to the uniform design of the current Audi range. Elements such as the front and rear lights, roofline and profile are all reminiscent of the new A8, A7 Sportback and even the tiny A1 hatch

Measuring 4.92 metres long, 1.87m wide and 1.46m tall, the new A6 is virtually identical in size to the A7 Sportback. But where the A7 is offered as a sporting 'four-door coupe', the A6 will be targeted to the 'executive sedan' market.

For Australia, three powertrains are on offer with the new seventh-generation A6, kicking off with the entry-level 2.8 FSI quattro and topping out with the 3.0 TFSI quattro.

Entering at $93,900, the naturally-aspirated 2.8 FSI produces 150kW and 280Nm of torque - this means that power is down by 12kW compared to the previous model, but torque remains unchanged.

Thanks to the lower output however - along with its lighter construction and more aerodynamic body - fuel consumption has fallen by 1.0 litre to 8.0 l/100km.

The mid-range 3.0 TDI turbodiesel engine offers 180kW and 500Nm of torque, with fuel consumption listed at 8.0 l/100km.

Power for the diesel is up 4kW, torque remains unchanged and fuel consumption has fallen by just over a litre to 6.0 l/100km - but the price has increased by $6000 to $116,500.

At the top end is the supercharged 3.0 litre TFSI petrol engine, producing 220kW and 440Nm of torque and with fuel consumption listed at 8.2 l/100km. That means power is up by 7kW and 20Nm, while fuel use is down from the outgoing model's 9.5 l/100km. Price is up by $7000, at $121,500.

All three variants are equipped with Audi's seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels through the company's quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Audi's Drive Select dynamic handling system is standard for each model, and an adaptive air suspension package with controlled damping is available as an option. A dynamic steering package will be available as an option later in the year.

Standard features include the Pre Sense crash mitigation technology, along with active lane assist, blindspot detection, night vision with pedestrian detection, radar cruise control and automatic park assist.
