The load-hauling steed in Audi's new A6 family has arrived in Australia, with the debut this week of the 2012 A6 Avant.

Hitting local showrooms nearly one year after the launch of its sedan sibling, the new A6 Avant will be offered with a pair of 2.0 litre turbocharged engines; petrol and diesel.

Later this year, Audi will add the sedan's 3.0 litre petrol V6 to the wagon range - but only in the form of the high-riding A6 Allroad quattro.

Mechanical Package

Opening the A6 Avant range is the petrol 2.0 TFSI, its turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine producing 132kW and 320Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption for this model is listed at 6.5 l/100km, and Audi promises a 0-100km/h run of 8.6 seconds - compared to 6.4 l/100km and 8.3 seconds for the equivalent A6 sedan.

At the other end of the two-model range is the diesel 2.0 TDI, featuring a four-cylinder turbo engine delivering 130kW and 380Nm of torque.

For the diesel, fuel consumption is rated at 5.1 l/100km and the 0-100km/h time at 8.5 seconds - compared to the TDI sedan's 5.0 l/100km and 8.2 seconds.

In both models, power is transferred to the front wheels through Audi's multitronic CVT automatic transmission. The CVT box features a sports mode and eight fixed ratios.

Standard features for both models include 17-inch aluminium wheels, cruise control, Audi Parking System Plus, light and rain sensors, electric opening and closing tailgate, Audi Music Interface with six-channel amplifier, 10 speakers and subwoofer.

Audi Drive Select is also standard, offering Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Individual and Efficiency modes.

Standard safety features include driver and front passenger airbags, along with side and curtain airbag for front and rear rows.

In size, the A6 Avant has grown, getting a 70mm longer wheelbase and a little more width, growing from 1855mm to 1870mm.

Thanks to the use of composite aluminium in various body panels and suspension components, the new A6 Avant is up to 70kg lighter than its predecessor, depending on the spec.

Rear storage capacity is the big selling point for all wagons. While there is now more leg and shoulder space, storage capacity remains largely unchanged from the previous generation.

With the rear seats up, there's 565 litres of space in the back, growing to 1680 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

This puts the new A6 Avant more-or-less on par with its main competitors, the new 5 Series Touring offering 560/1670 litres, and the E-Class Estate offering 575 litres with the seats up and a huge 1950 litres when folded flat.
