Audi's A6 range has been filled out with the addition of the 2012 A6 Avant wagon, debuting at a special event in Germany today.

The new A6 Avant offers improved passenger space and, like its sedan sibling, keeps weight and fuel consumption down through the benefit of lightweight composite construction.

In size, the A6 Avant has grown a little, getting a 70mm longer wheelbase and a little more width, growing from 1855mm to 1870mm.

Thanks to its lightweight materials and the use of aluminium in the suspension components, the new A6 Avant is up to 70kg lighter than its predecessor, depending on the spec.

Rear storage capacity is the big selling point for all wagons. While there is now more leg and shoulder space, storage capacity remains largely unchanged from the previous generation.

With the rear seats up, there's 565 litres of space in the back, growing to 1680 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

This puts the new A6 Avant more-or-less on par with its main competitors, the new 5 Series Touring offering 560/1670 litres, and the E-Class Estate offering 575 litres with the seats up and a huge 1950 litres when folded flat.

On the styling front, the A6 Avant continues the themes of the sedan, with an identical face, character lines and taillights - and only the usual wagon differences.

The story is the same in the cabin, with the same design and trim options as the sedan.

Engine options for the A6 Avant are in-line with those offered with the sedan, including a pair of 150kW/280Nm and 220kW/440Nm petrol engines and four diesels ranging from a 132kW 2.0 litre TDI to a 233kW 3.0 litre TDI V6.

Australia

The new A6 Avant goes on sale in Europe sometime around August or September.

An Australian debut has yet to be confirmed, but expect the A6 Avant to follow the A6 Sedan's local debut at the Australian International Motor Show in July.
