Audi has announced the introduction of two new fuel-efficient turbo diesel powertrains for the Euro-market A5 Coupe and A5 Sportback, delivering fuel economy figures as low as 4.4 l/100km.

Based on the existing 2.0 TDI engine that's available overseas, the new 2.0 TDIe engines come in two power outputs.

The base engine is a 100kW unit, and is only available in the A5 Sportback. It's capable of propelling the Sportback from zero to 100km/h in 9.5 seconds, consumes 4.4 litres of diesel per 100km and emits an average of 117 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

A 120kW version of the same 2.0 litre engine is also offered, and can be optioned for the A5 Sportback or Coupe.

In the Sportback it consumes 4.5 l/100km on the combined cycle, while the Coupe sips 4.4 l/100km and sprints to 100km/h in 8.4 seconds. CO2 emissions for the lighter Coupe average out at 115g/km, while the Sportback with the 120kW engine emits 118g/km.

All TDIe engines are paired with a six-speed manual transmission, with no automatic offered.

You can put the cheque books away, Audi Australia has no plans at present to bring the A5 TDIe to local showrooms.
