2012 AUDI A4

Audi has rolled out a facelifted A4 and S4 line-up for the 2012 model year, following the debut of the updated A5 range in July.

Among the updates are a subtly reshaped grille that brings the A4 range in-line with the brand's latest styling, along with the German carmaker's new uniform headlight styling. There are also reshaped taillights and lightly updated bumpers at both ends.

Engines

Audi's best-selling model line has also come in for an engine update, gaining the new 1.8 litre four-cylinder TFSI engine that debuted with the updated A5 range.

Producing 125kW of power, the new engine delivers a touch more power than its 118kW predecessor. Fuel consumption is listed at 4.6 l/100km.

A 157kW 2.0 litre TFSI four-cylinder petrol engine (up from 132kW) also features, while a supercharged 245kW 3.0 litre V6 carries over for the range-topping S4.

On the diesel side, Audi's 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel can be had in Europe in five different outputs, depending on specification: 88, 100, 105, 120 and 130kW. In the current Australian line-up, only the 105kW variant is offered.

Two 3.0 litre six-cylinder turbodiesels will also be offered in Europe, producing 204 and 182kW. The current Australian-delivered 3.0 litre turbodiesel A4 produced 176kW.

A new electromechanical steering system is now standard across the range, along with automatic stop/start, brake-energy recuperation and an on-demand-only operation for ancillary components.

Audi claims an average fuel consumption improvement of around 11 percent as a result of these updates.

In Europe, all front-wheel-drive variants are fitted with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, while the existing Multitronic CVT and seven-speed S tronic automatic transmissions are available as an option, depending on specification.

Australia

Revealed in sedan and 'Avant' wagon form, the updated A4 and S4 models are likely to hit Australia in the new year, although the German carmaker's local arm has yet to confirm plans.
