Audi's new five-door A1 Sportback has arrived in Australia, delivering a practical new option for buyers looking at the light-car end of the local prestige segment.

Priced in-line with the three-door range, the arrival of the A1 Sportback also brings new three- and five-door entry models powered by a 1.2 litre petrol engine.

The new 63kW opener cuts the price of entry to $26,500 (plus on-roads), compared to $29,990 for the existing 1.4 litre engine, previously the base option.

Mechanical Package

The new turbocharged 1.2 litre petrol engine produces 63kW and 160Nm of torque.

Paired exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission, the engine promises fuel consumption figures of 5.1 l/100km, with a 0-100km/h time of 11.9 seconds in A1 Sportback form.

The larger 1.4 litre petrol engine continues in 2012/2013, producing 90kW and 200Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption climbs marginally to 5.3 l/100km for both the six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic, and the 0-100km/h time falls to 8.9 seconds.

The top-shelf 1.4 litre turbo- and supercharged engine, powering the 1.4 TFSI and Sport models (along with the Polo GTI and Fabia RS), delivers 136kW and 250Nm of torque.

Matched with the seven-speed S tronic automatic, fuel consumption for the performance engine is listed at 5.9 l/100km - the thirstiest model in the range.

Representing the diesel world is the 66kW/230Nm 1.6 TDI model, with fuel consumption listed at 3.8 l/100km for the manual and 4.2 l/100km for the seven-speed auto.

The A1 Sportback shares the three-door's underside setup, with suspension including MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam rear arrangement.

There is also electro-hydraulic steering and electronic stability control.

Standard features on entry-level Attraction models (1.2, 1.4 petrol, 1.6 diesel) include 15-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, trip computer, power windows, auto headlights and wipers, multifunction leather steering wheel, a retractable 6.5-inch screen with MP3 and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming.

The 1.4 TFSI Ambition adds 16-inch wheels and sports suspension, along with sports seats, fog lights, a centre arm rest up front, and piano black highlights.

In Sport form, the A1 Sportback gets 17-inch alloys, auto climate control, rear parking sensors, xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights, and LED interior lighting.

Safety features across the range include six airbags - dual front, side and curtain - and while there is no ANCAP safety score, the A1 Sportback carries a 5-Star Euro NCAP rating.

While both bodystyles share the same 3954mm length and 2469mm wheelbase, the five-door A1 benefits from a taller roofline, giving rear passengers great headroom.

Audi promises an additional 11m of headroom, thanks to a 6mm taller and 80mm longer roof.

The A1 Sportback seats five as standard, although the centre rear seat is deleted if buyers order the hatch with the $2090 sunroof.

In five-door form, the A1 Sportback weighs in at 1065kg, about 25kg greater than the three-door.

Rear cargo space is listed at 270 litres with the rear seats up, growing to 920 litres with the rear passengers tossed out and their seats folded flat.
