Updates to Volvo's Australian line-up continue today, with the launch of the S60 R-Design, revealed internationally late last year.

Joining the sports-focused R-Design variant is the promised turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder GTDi T5 engine, available with both the R-Design model and with the regular S60.

Both S60 variants enter the Volvo line-up on the heels of yesterday's announcement of updates to other models, including the C30, C70, S40, V50, V70, S80 and XC SUV models.

The R-Design S60 is offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive with the powerful 224kW 3.0 litre six-cylinder turbocharged T6 variant.

"The all-new S60 marks the beginning of a new approach to our successful R-Design," Paul Welander, Volvo's Senior Vice President of Product Development said.

"In the R-Design chassis we've sharpened the steering, the agility and the solid overall impression still further compared with the dynamic chassis in the all-new S60."

On the styling front, the S60 R-Design models get a sportier front bumper, a small boot-spoiler and a faux rear-diffuser with twin exhaust tips poking through. Five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels prop up each corner.

Handling is improved thanks to 15 percent stiffer springs and 20 percent stiffer bushes behind, along with a 15mm lower ride height. There are also new monotube dampers up back and a strut brace across the top of the engine bay.

The 0-100km/h sprint for the T5 engine is covered in a claimed 7.5 seconds, while the T6 variants will hit 100km/h in 6.1 seconds.

With a Manufacturer's List Price of at $51,950, the new S60 T5 also introduces a new entry price point, despite sharing its higher-standard specifications with the mid-range turbodiesel S60 D5 AWD.

Standard equipment for the S60 T5 includes Electronic Climate Control, cruise control, leather trim, High Performance Sound system, power windows, retractable exterior mirrors and driver's seat, Bluetooth, rear park assist, rain sensor wipers and17-inch alloy wheels.

As with all Volvo models, the T5's safety features include City Safety, ABS, DSTC, driver and front passenger front and side airbags and full length side curtain airbags. Also included is Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) and Side Impact Protection System (SIPS).
